John W. Connell, PT, MSBS has been a practicing Physical Therapist for 17 years in various practice settings after graduating from the Medical College of Ohio in 2003. His area of specialty and practice is Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, becoming board-certified in 2018 and he became the Coordinator of Pulmonary Rehabilitation at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center (CVAMC) the same year. In 2014, John began working at CVAMC and was part of an interdisciplinary team that developed an Early Mobility Protocol that started in the Intensive Care Units and is now hospital wide. He has been adjunct faculty at Mount St Joseph University in the DPT program, Sinclair Community College in the PTA program and a guest lecturer in the University of Toledo DPT program. John has presented twice at the OPTA annual conference, including co-presenting an education session on health and wellness in 2021. He organized and presented at the annual Marci Moreno Pulmonary Rehab Conference at CVAMC over the last three years.  In 2020, after a grant from the Office of Rural Health, John and his team were able to begin the Home-Based Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs at CVAMC.  He now coordinates both onsite and home-based Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and home-based COVID-19 rehabilitation for CVAMC.

DESCRIPTION:

The 2 questions I get asked most about Pulmonary Rehab are how do you prescribe exercise for patients with chronic lung disease and why does a physical therapist work in pulmonary rehab?  This course will address both questions by demonstrating the unique perspective that physical therapy brings to this population through a review of the pathophysiology of chronic lung disease, setting and modifying an exercise prescription and the accompanying education to increase patient buy-in for chronic care management.

At the end of this presentation, the participant will . . .

  • Describe abnormal physiology of external respiration in obstructive and restrictive lung dysfunction.
  • Examine exercise tolerance in obstructive and restrictive lung dysfunction and the downward spiral effect of breathing discomfort.
  • Select the appropriate pulmonary rehabilitation exercise prescription and modality for the patient with decreased exercise tolerance.
  • Select appropriate education modalities for specific populations and settings.
  • Construct a statement sentence supporting why PT’s and PTA’s are Health and Wellness Experts.
